They do not identify a complete sheet specification. A bottle resin, a molding compound, a foam panel and a solid engineering sheet may share an acronym while behaving differently in fabrication and service.

For our PP, PE and HDPE sheet work, we start with the part's duty: chemical contact, impact, wear, optical clarity, moisture exposure or dimensional fit. The comparisons below explain where other common plastics differ. The material offered for a job must still be identified by its grade, formulation and supplied form.

Material families in this guide

PET (polyethylene terephthalate)

PP (polypropylene)

PE (polyethylene)

PS (polystyrene)

PA (polyamide / nylon)

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene)

PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate / acrylic)

PVC (polyvinyl chloride)

PET: packaging resin and engineering stock

PET means polyethylene terephthalate, a thermoplastic polyester used in bottles, packaging film and textile fibers. Transparent amorphous PET and semi-crystalline engineering PET are different material forms. Engineering stock shapes, sometimes described by the older name PET-P, are used for machined parts where stiffness, wear behavior and dimensional stability matter.

Do not transfer a bottle's transparency or a packaging application's performance to an engineering sheet. Check whether the proposed material is amorphous or semi-crystalline and whether it is modified. Glass-transition and melting data describe different thermal behavior; neither alone establishes a loaded part's operating temperature or suitability for hot, wet service.

PP: grade and service conditions

Polypropylene (PP) is used in molded containers, packaging, fibers and fabricated industrial panels. Low density, low water absorption and resistance to many aqueous chemicals are useful reasons to consider a PP sheet. Homopolymer and copolymer grades do not provide the same balance of stiffness and impact behavior, particularly in cold conditions.

For a sheet or fabricated part, use our PP sheet properties and processing notes. Review the actual chemical exposure, load and joining method. A melting point is not a working-temperature rating, and outdoor, food-contact or medical suitability requires evidence for the proposed formulation and conditions.

PE: LDPE, HDPE and UHMWPE are not equivalents

Polyethylene (PE) covers several material types. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is commonly used where flexibility is important, such as films. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is generally stiffer and is used in bottles, pipes and solid panels. These examples involve different grades and production forms; a pipe-grade description is not a specification for any PE sheet.

High-molecular-weight polyethylene (HMWPE) and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) are often considered for sliding or wear components, but they should not replace HDPE solely because all are polyethylene. Our UHMWPE selection notes for wear and sliding parts explain the relevant contact and load conditions. Low moisture absorption does not eliminate thermal movement or deformation under sustained load.

PS: solid sheets versus foam

Polystyrene (PS) includes transparent general-purpose polystyrene (GPPS) and rubber-modified high-impact polystyrene (HIPS). GPPS is useful where transparency and rigidity matter; HIPS trades that clarity for improved toughness. Both are used in molded products and extruded sheet, including packaging and appliance components.

Insulation and protective packaging commonly use expanded polystyrene foam (EPS), not a solid HIPS sheet. A foam panel's thermal-insulation performance cannot be assigned to solid PS. For formed trays, displays or model-making panels, check the specific sheet's impact behavior, heat exposure and chemical compatibility rather than selecting on price or the PS acronym alone.

PA: moisture affects fit

Polyamide (PA), commonly called nylon, includes PA6, PA66 and other distinct types. Cast and extruded nylon are also different stock-production routes. Nylon is commonly considered for gears, bushings, rollers and other mechanical components where strength, wear and sliding behavior matter; fibers and molded automotive parts use their own grades.

Unfilled PA6 is commonly described as melting around 220°C and PA66 around 260°C; these are approximate material values, not continuous operating-temperature ratings. Nylon absorbs moisture, which can change both dimensions and mechanical behavior. For a close-fitting part, define the moisture condition at machining and measurement and the humidity or water exposure in service. Oil and fuel compatibility must also be checked for the named polyamide and exposure.

ABS: formed housings and surface finish

ABS means acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. Its formulation combines a rigid styrenic matrix with a rubber phase to balance stiffness and impact behavior. Molded appliance housings, automotive interior parts, electronic enclosures and toys are familiar uses. Extruded ABS sheet is also used for thermoformed housings and panels.

For a formed panel, compare the actual sheet grade, surface finish and forming behavior, not an injection-molding resin alone. Some sheet products combine ABS with a surface layer such as PMMA; that layered construction is not the same as plain ABS. Outdoor exposure, chemical cleaning and fire requirements need evidence for the offered construction.

PMMA: optical sheets and impact limits

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), also called acrylic, is used for clear or translucent displays, signs, lighting components and glazing. Sheet is available in cast and extruded forms. Compare light transmission at the required thickness and color for the specified grade rather than relying on a blanket comparison with glass.

Optical clarity does not establish impact safety. Standard acrylic and impact-modified acrylic are different choices; assess the required break resistance and any glazing or guard requirements for the actual product. Fabrication also matters: drilling, cutting and fastening should avoid concentrated stress and damaged edges. Check chemical cleaners against the selected acrylic grade.

PVC: rigid and plasticized forms

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) can be used in rigid or flexible formulations. Unplasticized PVC, commonly written PVC-U or uPVC, is used for rigid sheets, pipes and profiles. Plasticized PVC, also called PVC-P, is used for flexible products such as cable coverings, flooring and tubing. These forms are not interchangeable because they share the PVC name.

Identify whether a panel is solid rigid PVC, rigid foam PVC or a flexible formulation. That distinction changes stiffness, weight, fabrication and application. Chemical resistance, weathering and fire behavior still depend on the formulation and test conditions. A general PVC fire-resistance description does not establish a building-use classification or approval for a finished assembly.

Compare a defined requirement, not a material ranking

There is no universal best plastic in this group. An optical display, a wet-service panel and a loaded sliding component are different jobs. For a closer sheet-level comparison, our PA, PP and PE sheet selection comparison connects moisture, joining, wear and dimensional behavior to the component.

Keep each technical value connected to the material grade, test method and conditions. Food-contact, medical, electrical and fire requirements need their own relevant documentation; a familiar application example is not an approval. Recyclability likewise depends on the formulation, contamination and available collection route, not simply the polymer acronym.

If you are comparing another material with our PP, PE or HDPE sheet, explain which requirement controls the decision and what the current part does not achieve. We can review the proposed sheet and cutting or drawing-based machining scope against that requirement. Any replacement must retain the performance and acceptance conditions the part actually needs.

Start with the material form and application PET, PP, PE, PS, PA, ABS, PMMA and PVC identify different polymer families.
