HDPE vs. PP vs. PVC: Como selecionar a folha de plástico certa para aplicações industriais e químicas
HDPE, polypropylene (PP) and rigid PVC are all used for tanks, liners, guards, ducting and fabricated plastic parts, but they are not interchangeable. The correct choice depends on the exact chemical, concentration, temperature, exposure time, mechanical load and fabrication method.
This guide gives engineers and purchasing teams a practical starting point. The values below are typical ranges for common industrial sheet grades—not guaranteed values for every formulation. Final selection should always be confirmed against the technical data sheet and chemical-resistance table for the grade being quoted.

1. Chemical resistance: there is no universal winner
A material described as “chemical resistant” may still swell, soften, crack or lose strength under the wrong conditions. A useful compatibility check needs five details: chemical name, concentration, normal operating temperature, cleaning or upset temperature, and whether exposure is continuous, intermittent or by splash only.
When PP-H is commonly considered
PP-H is widely specified for chemical tanks, pickling equipment, scrubbers and ventilation components because many grades have good resistance to a broad range of acids and alkalis and can operate at higher temperatures than standard HDPE or PVC-U. Compatibility still changes with concentration and temperature, especially with oxidising media and certain solvents.
For greater rigidity, fibreglass-reinforced PP (FRPP) may be considered, but reinforcement does not automatically improve chemical compatibility. The resin grade, reinforcement content and fabrication method must be checked.
When HDPE is commonly considered
HDPE is often selected for water handling, food-processing components, outdoor equipment and impact-prone applications. It has very low moisture absorption and good resistance to many aqueous chemicals. Strong oxidisers, hydrocarbons, surfactants and elevated temperatures require closer review because they can change permeation or stress-cracking behaviour.

When rigid PVC is commonly considered
PVC-U combines high rigidity with good resistance to many inorganic, organic and oxidising media. It is used in chemical installations, laboratory equipment and ventilation systems. Its lower operating-temperature range and limited compatibility with some solvents must be considered. Flame performance is formulation- and thickness-specific, so request the applicable test classification rather than assuming every PVC sheet is self-extinguishing.
2. Temperature and load must be checked together
Published temperature ranges are not standalone design limits. A sheet that tolerates a short thermal exposure may creep or deflect when it carries a continuous load. Tank wall thickness, support spacing, welded-joint design, liquid density and ambient temperature all affect performance.
- Use the highest normal and cleaning temperature—not only room temperature.
- State whether the sheet is continuously loaded, mechanically fixed or fully supported.
- Allow for thermal expansion in long panels, ducts and tank walls.
- For outdoor projects, specify UV exposure and minimum winter temperature.
3. Fabrication can decide the material
The best raw material can still fail if joints, radii or tolerances are poorly designed. PP and HDPE are commonly joined by extrusion or hot-gas welding; welding parameters and filler rod should match the sheet grade. PVC-U can be welded and, with a compatible system, adhesively bonded. For CNC parts, consider dimensional tolerance, flatness, tool path, heat generation and the direction of load around holes and fasteners.
If stiffness is the priority, compare a thicker HDPE section with PP-H, FRPP or PVC-U instead of judging materials at equal thickness only. Our team can review a drawing before quoting cut-to-size sheets or machined parts.
4. Cost should be compared as an installed system
There is no reliable universal price order for HDPE, PP and PVC. Resin grade, thickness, colour, UV or flame-retardant additives, certification, sheet size, quantity and freight can change the result. A lower sheet price may be offset by thicker walls, more supports, difficult fabrication or shorter service life.
For a useful comparison, request quotations using the same finished dimensions, tolerances, machining scope, packing method and delivery destination.

- Material already specified, or the service conditions if you need a recommendation.
- Chemical name and concentration, including cleaning chemicals.
- Normal, maximum and minimum operating temperatures.
- Sheet thickness, width and length, or a PDF/DWG drawing.
- Quantity and whether repeat orders are expected.
- Colour, surface finish, UV, flame-retardant or food-contact requirements.
- Required machining, welding or cut-to-size work.
- Delivery country, city or port.

No. PP-H is often considered when higher stiffness or operating temperature is required, while HDPE may be preferred for impact, low-temperature or outdoor duty. The chemical, concentration, temperature, tank dimensions and weld design determine the final choice.
Can HDPE, PP and PVC be welded with the same process?
They can all be welded with suitable equipment, but the temperatures, filler materials and procedures are different. Do not mix filler rod or assume one welding procedure is valid for all three polymers.
Which material is cheapest?
There is no fixed answer. Compare the exact grade, finished thickness, fabrication, packing and freight. Installed cost and expected service life are more useful than raw sheet price alone.
