Composite Road Mats for Coal Mines: Material and Construction

“Composite road mat” is a product description, not a precise material specification. For a coal-mine enquiry, identify the polymer, panel construction and intended location before comparing quotations. A surface access route and an underground coal roadway need different assessments. We supply HDPE ground protection mats and temporary access panels for surface protection and temporary access; our standard mats should not be assumed suitable for underground installation.

HDPE (high-density polyethylene) and UHMWPE (ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) are different polyethylene materials. Neither name identifies a fibre-reinforced structure. FRP means fibre-reinforced plastic; its resin, fibre type and reinforcement arrangement also need to be specified. A product sold as a “composite mat” may use a proprietary polymer blend or an engineered panel design. Ask for the actual material designation and a construction drawing rather than treating these descriptions as interchangeable.

Compare the finished mat, not just the resin datasheet. A solid sheet, a ribbed panel and a reinforced structure can have different bending, connection and handling requirements. Confirm overall thickness, usable area, panel weight, tread, joints and lifting provisions with the supplier. Load information should identify the tested construction, loading arrangement and supporting ground; a polymer strength figure alone does not establish a mat’s vehicle capacity.

For a proposed underground installation, check the evidence for the actual product and application. In New South Wales, Australia, TRG 3608 addresses fire resistance, static discharge and combustion-product risks for non-metallic materials used in underground coal mines. FRAS means fire-resistant anti-static in that guide; it is not a generic label for plastic mats. Ask the mine’s technical team which assessments apply to the chosen location and assembly. A resin flammability rating or a different mat’s report does not establish site acceptance.

Review attachments as well as the panel: connectors, metal fittings and later fabrication may change the assessed assembly. Confirm what the test evidence covers before modifying a mat. An access panel is not automatically a suitable floor covering for an electrical room, a pump station or a ventilation area. The intended location and use need their own review; a quotation confirms supply terms, not permission to install underground.

    Compare like-for-like mat quotations

    • Product identity: material grade, thickness, solid or ribbed construction, reinforcement details where applicable, tread, usable dimensions and the panel drawing.
    • Evidence scope: product and manufacturer identified in each report, test methods and results, material formulation, assessed construction and any limits on sizes, colours or attachments.
    • Supply and handling: quantity, panel weight, lifting method, connectors and accessories, packing requirements and delivery destination.

Discuss the specified mat with us

Send us your material designation, panel thickness, construction drawing or reference, quantity and delivery destination when you request a mat quotation. State whether the proposed use is above or below ground and include the mine’s required documentation. We will confirm the product configuration and supporting information available for your enquiry. Underground use remains subject to the applicable requirements and the mine operator’s technical review.
