HDPE and PP sheets are used in chemical-processing equipment, but neither material is universally “chemical proof.” Compatibility depends on the exact substance, concentration, temperature, exposure time, stress, cleaning cycle and sheet grade. A material that performs in a splash guard may be unsuitable for a continuously loaded tank made from the same thickness.

A compatibility chart is only a screening source. Do not extrapolate from a dilute room-temperature result to concentrated, hot or mechanically stressed service.

Temperature and structural loading
Thermoplastics lose stiffness as temperature rises and can deform under long-term load. A published maximum temperature is not an allowable design temperature for a loaded tank, duct or platform. Include normal and upset temperatures, liquid head, pressure/vacuum, unsupported span and service life in the design basis.
Do not describe sheet work surfaces or covers as platforms unless the complete assembly is engineered for personnel loads and applicable safety requirements. Adding thickness alone does not replace support calculations.
Welding and fabrication controls
- Match sheet and welding-rod grades.
- Define joint geometry, preparation and weld sequence.
- Use clean surfaces, controlled parameters and trained operators.
- Allow for thermal expansion in long panels and ducting.
- Add practical radii at machined corners and avoid unnecessary notches.
- Identify visual, mechanical, leak or spark testing as applicable.
- Define repair, retest and weld-record requirements before production.

Documents and inspection
Define document requirements in the RFQ. Depending on the project, these may include product/grade identification, technical data, chemical-compatibility evidence, batch traceability, dimension reports, welding records, certificates and test reports. Confirm that each document applies to the exact grade, color and thickness ordered.
Inspection should follow the drawing and test plan rather than a generic statement such as “quality checked.” Identify critical dimensions, sampling, surface criteria, weld acceptance, leak testing, labeling and release authority.

Frequently asked questions
Can you select material from pH alone?
No. Chemical identity, concentration, temperature, mixture, exposure time and stress are also required.
Does a thicker sheet improve chemical compatibility?
Not necessarily. Thickness affects structure and wear allowance; it does not make an incompatible grade suitable for the chemical environment.
Can a chemical tank be quoted without a test plan?
A preliminary quote may be possible, but the final scope should define design responsibility, welding, inspection and testing to avoid commercial and safety gaps.
