HDPE ground protection mats can reduce rutting and surface damage on temporary construction routes, but a mat does not create unlimited ground-bearing capacity. Safe selection depends on subgrade strength, moisture, slope, vehicle configuration, axle or track loads, turning/braking, traffic frequency, panel support and connection method.

Do not select a mat only from machine weight or sheet thickness. Two vehicles with the same gross weight can create very different ground pressure and turning forces.

Mat specification: more than thickness
- HDPE grade: specify outdoor/UV requirements and temperature range.
- Panel dimensions: balance route coverage, handling, storage and transport.

Route preparation and installation plan
- Survey the route. Identify soft spots, buried services, drainage, slopes, overhead risks and restricted areas.
- Prepare the surface. Remove sharp debris and address holes, abrupt changes or standing water as the site plan requires.
- Set the approved layout. Install panels in the specified orientation and route width.
- Connect and transition. Use the approved connection and edge treatment; do not improvise connectors.
- Control traffic. Set speed, direction, spacing, turning and crossing rules for the route.
- Inspect during use. Check movement, settlement, damaged texture, loose connectors and mud/debris accumulation.
- Remove safely. Clean, inspect and stack panels using the planned handling method.
Installation and traffic controls must follow the project’s risk assessment and local safety requirements. Anti-slip texture can improve grip under suitable conditions, but it cannot guarantee traction in every combination of mud, ice, oil, slope, tire or track.
Tracked equipment and concentrated loads
Tracked machines require particular review. Grouser design, machine mass, turning method and debris can gouge or shift a mat. Avoid making a general “tracked equipment approved” claim without written confirmation for the vehicle and operating conditions.
Crane outriggers, aerial-lift stabilizers and jacks create concentrated loads that are different from a rolling tire or track. Ground protection mats should not be treated as certified outrigger pads unless the complete support system has been designed and approved for that purpose.
Inspection, cleaning and replacement

- Remove embedded stones, metal and other debris that could reduce traction or damage the ground.
