For a dock panel, aquaculture baffle or outdoor enclosure, specify the HDPE grade as well as the part geometry. Water exposure, sunlight, temperatures, sustained loads, wear, cleaning and fixings all affect the material and fabrication requirements. Low water absorption does not establish UV performance or a panel load rating.
Send us the installation location, exposure, drawing and quantity so we can review sheet supply and machining. That review is for a material-and-fabrication quotation. A qualified project designer must assess structural platforms, flotation systems and other safety-critical assemblies against their design and approval requirements.

Start with the outdoor exposure
- Sunlight: daily exposure, orientation, climate and expected service life
- Temperature: installation and service temperatures, sunlight-heated surfaces and temperature cycling
- Water: fresh water, seawater or wastewater; splash, wash-down or continuous immersion
- Mechanical duty: sustained and peak loads, impact, sliding wear, vessel contact and vibration
- Support: unsupported spans, support positions, edge restraint and allowable deflection
- Cleaning: chemicals, concentration, temperature, pressure washing and frequency
- Installation: fasteners, thermal movement, drainage and replaceability
Specify outdoor exposure for the exact offered grade and color. Confirm whether a UV-stabilized formulation and relevant weathering information are available. Black color alone is not proof of UV performance, and stabilization does not guarantee fade-free service or a fixed outdoor lifetime.
Marine and outdoor application selector
| Component | Why HDPE may be evaluated | Critical design checks |
|---|---|---|
| Dock edge or fender-facing panel | Toughness, low water absorption and replaceable wear surface | Vessel contact, abrasion, backing support, bolts and edge detail |
| Boat interior or equipment panel | Moisture resistance and machinability | UV exposure, stiffness, fire requirement, fastening and appearance |
| Aquaculture divider or baffle | Wet service and fabrication options | Water chemistry, cleaning, span, holes, flow load and compliance |
| Farm or outdoor enclosure panel | Impact resistance and wash-down suitability | UV grade, frame spacing, sanitation and fasteners |
| Outdoor machine guard | Corrosion resistance and cut-to-size supply | Impact, access safety, visibility, fire rules and structural support |
| Liner or protective wear panel | Replaceable moisture-resistant layer | Required backing support, abrasion, fixings, thermal movement and trapped water |
The table identifies purchasing inputs; it does not approve an installed assembly. For a walkway, deck, handrail, flotation system or other safety-critical part, the responsible project designer must assess the complete design, load cases and applicable requirements.
HDPE, PP-H or UHMWPE?
| Requirement | Useful starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| General wet/outdoor panel | UV-stabilized HDPE grade | Exposure, stiffness, impact, support and documentation |
| Hot process water or cleaning cycles | Compare grade-specific PP-H and HDPE data | Exact medium, concentration, temperature, load and UV exposure |
| High sliding abrasion | Compare UHMWPE with HDPE | Counterface, speed, pressure, impact and replacement interval |
| High stiffness over an open span | Improve support or compare a stiffer material | Deflection, creep, temperature and structural design |
| Specified flame performance | Grade with evidence for the specified fire requirement | Required test method and classification; tested grade, thickness, color and document scope |
HDPE is one type of polyethylene (PE). Compare the offered HDPE, PP-H and UHMWPE grades against the actual service conditions. Our HDPE vs PP chemical-equipment comparison addresses media and cleaning cycles; the industrial HDPE application guide covers other component duties.
Thickness, support and thermal movement
Use the selected grade's expansion data and the panel temperature range to define movement allowances. A panel restrained at every fixing can distort or load the fastener areas as it heats and cools. Specify support and movement details together.
Thickness depends on panel dimensions, loads, support spacing, temperature and allowable deflection, including long-term deformation under sustained load. Our HDPE thickness specification guide lists the design inputs to send with a drawing; it does not provide a universal support spacing or load rating.
Fastening details to put on the drawing
- Fastener material suitable for the marine or outdoor environment
- Hole diameter, slot direction and edge distance
- Washer or backing-plate dimensions
- Fixed and sliding points where thermal movement is allowed
- Support spacing and contact surface
- Corner and edge radii
- Sealant or gasket compatibility where used
- Drainage and access for inspection or replacement
Specify the fixing detail for the actual HDPE panel rather than copying a metal-panel arrangement. Clamping, bearing area, edge distance and movement allowance must suit the grade, thickness and loads. Identify any adjoining metals that also need corrosion review.
Fabrication and inspection
We can quote cut panels, drilling and CNC machining from a revision-controlled drawing. Mark the finished dimensions, tolerances, datums, edge requirements and part identification. If the assembly is to be welded, specify the sheet grade, joint design and process; where welding material is used, it must be compatible with the sheet.
Agree the inspection scope before production: material identification, thickness, overall size, drawing datums, critical features, surface, quantity and packing. For a trial piece or first article, define the sample quantity and acceptance checks. Specify any required batch identification, measuring conditions and inspection records; a technical data sheet is not a batch inspection report.

We supply industrial HDPE sheets and PP-H sheets, and can review drawing-based cutting or CNC machining. For an outdoor order, we confirm the offered grade, available supporting documents, dimensions, colors, tolerances and minimum order quantity in the quotation.
Frequently asked questions
Is black HDPE automatically UV resistant?
No. Color alone does not verify the formulation or weathering performance. Specify the outdoor requirement and request information for the exact grade.
Can HDPE be used as a dock walking surface?
Not from the sheet name or thickness alone. A qualified designer must assess the actual panel system for loads, supports, thermal movement, drainage, wet grip, fastening and the applicable requirements. A textured face is not proof of wet slip resistance under the expected contamination and wear.
Can you machine panels from our drawing?
We can quote cutting, drilling and CNC machining after reviewing your current drawing. Include the material grade, finished dimensions, datums, tolerances, quantity and inspection requirements. The quotation confirms the available material and machining scope.
