PE Mats for Underground Coal Mines: Buyer Safety Checks

    2025-07-23

    share:

Selecting polyethylene (PE) mats for an underground coal mine requires a review of the specific product and installation against applicable mine requirements. Review our standard polyethylene ground protection mats for product and construction information. Read our HDPE material overview for polymer background, not proof of mining suitability.

Identify the grade and finished mat

Polyethylene is a family of materials. HDPE, UHMWPE and other PE grades differ in composition and behavior; the polymer name alone does not establish operating temperature, impact strength or service life. Obtain data for the supplied grade and finished mat.

Electrical insulation is not the same as antistatic or static-dissipative behavior. Likewise, flame-retardant does not mean non-combustible. Confirm the required fire and electrical test methods, test conditions and acceptance limits for the exact mat; results for another grade or product are not interchangeable.

Review our PE ground protection panel product for the proposed mat construction.

Do not assume that a standard ground protection mat is approved for underground coal mining. The mine operator must confirm the applicable product category, local acceptance requirements and installation conditions. Product photographs, polymer names and descriptions of additives are not evidence of compliance.

Evidence and site conditions to check

    1. Fire performance: require a test report applicable to the specified product, formulation and thickness under the relevant method. Do not accept an unsupported Class A or non-combustible claim as a substitute for that evidence.
    2. Static electricity: specify the required electrical property, resistance limits and test conditions. Confirm the evidence for the finished mat and the proposed installation; standard insulating PE should not be assumed to dissipate charge.
    3. Chemical and water exposure: identify the chemicals, concentrations, temperatures, exposure time and cleaning agents. Check compatibility for the supplied grade rather than assuming resistance to all acids, alkalis or solvents.
    4. Load and wear: provide vehicle type, wheel or track loads, contact area, traffic frequency, gradients and ground support. Mat thickness or a generic wear-resistance claim alone does not establish the safe load or service life.
    5. Surface and maintenance: assess traction under the actual wet, dusty or contaminated conditions. Agree cleaning, inspection and damaged-mat replacement arrangements; a textured surface does not eliminate slipping or tripping risks.

Separate surface stockpile and loading areas from underground access routes in the specification. For each proposed location, identify the mine operating conditions and obtain the required product and installation acceptance before use.

    Define the proposed supply

    • Dimensions and processing: specify thickness, length, width, color, connection details and any required cuts or holes. Available material and processing options must be confirmed in the quotation.
    • Inspection and documentation: agree identification of the supplied grade, dimensional checks, surface inspection and any required fire or electrical test records before ordering. Do not treat general quality inspection as mine approval.
    • Packing and identification: agree the proposed film protection, pallet or crate arrangement and export marking. Keep product and batch identification traceable to the supplied records.

Send the requirements for supply review

Send the mine country and operating requirements, proposed location, required test evidence, material, thickness, dimensions or drawing, quantity and destination. Zhihong Plastic can review the supply request and confirm available material, processing scope, minimum order quantity and lead time in a quotation; this does not replace mine acceptance or establish underground-use approval.
