Nylon (polyamide, PA), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) sheets are not interchangeable material labels. Nylon is commonly evaluated for machined mechanical parts, while PP sheets and PE sheets are often considered for welded fabrications, linings, panels and components exposed to moisture or chemicals. The right selection depends on the exact grade, service condition, part design and fabrication route.
Do not select from a generic property table alone. To compare quotations, define load, movement, fluid, concentration, temperature, moisture, tolerance, joining method and required documents. Nylon, PP or PE: Start With the Exact Material Grade
“Nylon,” “PP” and “PE” each cover multiple grades and production routes. PA6, PA66, cast nylon and modified polyamides can respond differently to moisture, temperature and machining. PP-H, copolymer grades and modified PP should not be assumed equivalent. PE must be separated into HDPE, HMWPE, UHMWPE and other formulations before a property or process statement is carried into a purchase order.
Start with the exact material offered, then state the service requirement. A product name alone does not establish chemical suitability, outdoor life, food-contact compliance, fire behavior, dimensional stability or finished-part approval.

When Nylon Is a Candidate
Nylon is a polyamide family that may be evaluated for gears, bushes, rollers, pulleys, wear pads and other machined components subject to movement or load. “Nylon” is not enough for procurement: extruded PA6, cast nylon, PA66 and modified grades can differ in moisture response, impact behavior, stability and machining outcome.
For a nylon comparison, specify the humidity condition, dimensional state at inspection, static and dynamic load, speed, cycle, lubrication, mating material, operating temperature and machining tolerance. A catalogue figure should not be used as the design temperature or a universal wear statement for a finished part.
When PP Is a Candidate
PP is frequently evaluated for tanks, ducting, guards, trays, linings and fabricated chemical-equipment components. A suitable grade can combine low moisture uptake, weldability and useful resistance to defined chemical media. That does not make every PP sheet universally chemical-resistant: compatibility changes with grade, concentration, temperature, contact time and mechanical stress.
Separate PP-H, copolymer and special formulations in the specification. Stiffness, low-temperature impact response, flame behavior, UV stabilization and food-contact documentation depend on the offered grade. If the project requires one of these properties, request evidence for the quoted formulation, color and thickness.
When PE Is a Candidate
“PE” describes a broad family. For an industrial sheet, distinguish HDPE, HMWPE, UHMWPE and any required formulation. HDPE may be considered for panels, liners, guards, water-exposed parts and impact-prone components. UHMWPE may be evaluated for guides, chutes and wear liners, but its processing and specification can differ from an HDPE sheet.
PE has low moisture uptake, but thermal expansion, creep, stiffness and tolerances remain important. For outdoor work, confirm the proposed UV-stabilized formulation against the exposure and project requirement; for food contact, confirm the exact grade and color for the destination market.
Select by Failure Mechanism, Not Only by Application
- Bush, gear or roller: compare nylon and UHMWPE against load, speed, friction, lubrication, mating surface, temperature and tolerance.
- Welded tank, duct or chemical component: PP and HDPE can be candidates; verify the fluid, concentration, temperature, pressure or vacuum, support, weld process and equipment requirement.
- Guide, chute or wear liner: consider the UHMWPE grade and compare abrasion, impact, contact pressure, fixing method and thermal movement.
- Wet or outdoor panel: a suitable HDPE formulation can be considered, but UV exposure, temperature, fixing and permitted deflection still need definition.
- Machined part with a tight tolerance: review temperature and humidity variation, material conditioning, stock stability and machining sequence.
Chemical Contact Needs Service Data
A generic statement of “chemical resistance” is not enough for material approval. State the chemical name, concentration, service and cleaning temperatures, abnormal-condition temperature, contact type and duration, plus the applied load. Mixtures, surfactants, oxidizers and chemical exposure under stress can change a material response.
Use the compatibility information and data sheet for the grade actually quoted. For chemical equipment, compare the material, geometry and joining scope with the relevant HDPE versus PP water-treatment guide and chemical-processing selection guide. Critical service requires a project-specific review by the responsible engineering party.
Fabrication, Tolerances and Joints Can Decide the Material
A suitable resin can still fail a project if the part, weld or fixing is not specified correctly. For conventional or CNC machining, define functional tolerances, flatness, holes, radii, surface finish, measurement points and inspection condition. For welded sheet fabrications, define process, compatible welding rod, joint geometry, qualification and acceptance criterion. For bonding or printing, specify surface preparation and validate the chosen system.

Compare Total Cost and Scope, Not Only Sheet Price
Do not compare only price per kilogram or per sheet. A lower offer may not be comparable if it omits conditioning, documents or required fabrication steps.
