UHMWPE sheet properties: reading material data

Start with the exact grade and test conditions

When you compare UHMWPE sheet data, read the property name, test method, units and footnotes together. A result from a named grade under stated conditions is useful for screening materials. It is not automatically a guarantee for every UHMWPE sheet or for the finished part you are designing.

Identify what the material name covers

UHMWPE means ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene; PE-UHMW and PE1000 are also used in sheet catalogs. These names identify a material family, not a sheet thickness or a complete performance specification. Record the exact grade, formulation and stock form before comparing results.

Check whether each value is typical, indicative, a minimum, or an agreed acceptance limit. Do not turn an average value into a guaranteed minimum. A blank entry means the table does not provide that result; it does not mean zero performance or unlimited capability.

    Separate wear measurements from friction

Wear data describe material loss under a particular test. A sand-slurry result may be a relative volume-loss index against a named reference material, while a sliding-wear result may be reported as loss per distance. Compare the method and reference first; two different wear numbers may not measure the same duty.

A coefficient of friction describes resistance to motion between two surfaces. Distinguish starting or static friction from sliding or dynamic friction. Read the mating material and finish, contact pressure, speed, temperature and whether the test ran dry, in water or with lubrication. The coefficient is not a fixed number for all UHMWPE contacts.

For a guide or liner, assess wear and sliding behavior separately. A low-friction result does not itself establish low wear in abrasive material flow. Likewise, a favorable abrasion result does not tell you how smoothly a part will start moving against its actual mating surface.

Distinguish impact, stiffness and sustained load

Tensile stress at yield and tensile stress at break describe different points in a test. Tensile modulus describes stiffness, not the same property as strength. Read the test speed and temperature, and do not compare tensile and flexural values as though the loading arrangements were identical.

An impact result needs its method, notch geometry, specimen dimensions and test temperature. A result reported as no break means the specimen did not break in that test; it is not an unlimited impact rating. Cold-service performance also needs evidence for the actual grade and temperature.

A table may give compressive stress at 1%, 2% or 5% strain. Those are stresses associated with specified deformation, not interchangeable allowable loads for a part. Under sustained load, UHMWPE can creep. Use time- and temperature-relevant deformation data when a guide must hold its clearance or a pad must maintain its shape.

Read thermal values for their different purposes

Melting temperature, heat deflection temperature and a stated service-temperature range answer different questions. Heat deflection temperature is measured under a specified bending stress. A melting result is not an operating limit for a loaded component. Check whether the service-temperature guidance assumes an unloaded part, exposure in air, a short event or prolonged operation.

For thermal expansion, read the coefficient, its units and the temperature interval. Panel length and the expected temperature change determine the movement that the mounting must accommodate. Check joint gaps and fixing clearances for the assembly; low water absorption does not remove thermal movement.

Separate water absorption from chemical compatibility

A water-absorption percentage needs its test duration, water temperature and conditioning basis. A 24-hour immersion result and a saturation result are different entries. Low uptake is useful in wet service, but it does not prove resistance to every process fluid or cleaning chemical.

For chemical exposure, identify the substance, concentration, temperature, contact time and mechanical loading. Include washdown chemicals and lubricants, not just the normal process medium. Compatibility information for the chosen grade is more useful than an unqualified statement that UHMWPE is chemically inert.

Check special properties and the form being supplied

Food-contact, static-control, UV and other special requirements need evidence for the offered formulation and intended conditions. Food-contact documentation for one grade or color does not automatically cover another. Check the declared use, any restrictions and the formulation supplied.

For static control, distinguish surface resistance in ohms from volume resistivity in ohm-centimeters, and read the test method. A black sheet is not automatically antistatic or conductive. Compare the specified electrical requirement with data for the actual formulation, rather than relying on the color or the general UHMWPE name.

Also distinguish resin data from properties reported for finished stock shapes. Conventional UHMWPE has very high melt viscosity; compression molding and ram extrusion are common stock-production routes, followed by machining. Special melt-processable grades exist, but their processing capability should not be assumed for ordinary sheet stock.

Use the data to ask a more useful material question

If you are comparing sheets with us, identify the property that controls your design and the test conditions behind it. Tell us which values are for screening and which are acceptance requirements. Our UHMWPE material selection guide discusses the main trade-offs.

For examples of liners, guides and machined wear parts, use our UHMWPE applications guide. Share the relevant material specification or data-sheet reference when you contact us, so we can discuss the offered grade and fabrication scope against the requirement.
