Custom-Color HDPE Sheets: Color References and Sample Approval

    2026-05-13

    share:

For a custom-color HDPE order, specify the material grade and the appearance you need. A color name or screen image is not an acceptance standard. Record the agreed sample, sheet finish, thickness and viewing conditions in the order specification.

Send us the color reference, intended use, sheet dimensions and quantity. We can review the requested construction and sample requirements before quotation. Color approval does not replace checks on the material grade or suitability for the finished part.

    Solid color or two-color construction?

Sheet typeSheet constructionTypical reason to selectKey checks
Solid-color HDPEColor through the sheet thicknessMachined parts, panels, guards and components where cut edges should retain the colorGrade, shade, finish, dimensions, exposure and required documents
Two-color HDPEContrasting surface and core layersEngraved signs, labels and graphics that reveal the coreFace/core color order, engravable faces, cap thickness and sample artwork
Coated or laminated board (a separate construction)A separate facing or coating over a substrateOnly where that construction is specified for the applicationSubstrate, bond, edge appearance and exposure; confirm availability separately

For an engraved graphic, specify the face color and the contrasting color to be revealed. Our two-color HDPE engraving guide covers artwork, layer construction and trial-cut checks.

How to define the color target

    1. Choose a reference. Provide a physical sample where possible. If you use a color code, identify the reference system and the surface it represents.
    2. State the viewing conditions. Agree the lighting and viewing surface for comparison. Gloss, texture and viewing angle can change the apparent color.
    3. Define acceptable variation. Agree visual acceptance or, if required and available, an instrumental method and tolerance. Record the sample thickness, finish and measurement conditions.
    4. Approve a production sample. Agree the sample format and approval stage. Check the color on the proposed grade, thickness and finish; include a routed sample when engraving appearance matters.
    5. Retain the master. Keep the approved physical sample, its identifier and the specification revision with the purchase-order records, and refer to them for repeat orders.

A RAL, Pantone or other reference identifies the intended color; it does not guarantee an exact match on every plastic and finish. Compare the proposed HDPE sample with the agreed reference under the same lighting. Confirm any achievable match and acceptance tolerance before production.

Check documents for the offered colored grade

Check whether the declaration or test report covers the offered HDPE grade, color and conditions of use. Documents for natural HDPE may not cover a different pigment or additive formulation. State any food-contact, drinking-water, fire or electrical requirements before quotation, and confirm the relevant document's availability and scope.

Color can support identification, but it does not establish compliance for a sign, guard or playground component. Check the finished design, visibility, installation and applicable project requirements with the responsible designer or assessor.

    Outdoor color and UV performance

UV stabilization and color retention are separate questions: a UV-stabilized grade is not a promise of fade-free service. Describe the location, sunlight exposure and expected service period. Where weathering evidence is required, check its coverage for the offered grade and color, test conditions and acceptance criteria.

Outdoor panels also need supports and fixings that accommodate the selected grade’s thermal movement. Color approval is not a mounting-design check. Our marine and outdoor HDPE guide discusses exposure, support and fabrication requirements.

Minimum order, samples and repeat orders

Include the trial quantity, quantity per color and expected repeat demand in the enquiry. A custom-color production run may have a minimum order quantity (MOQ) that differs from a standard color. The quotation should confirm availability, the minimum quantity and any sampling stage for the requested grade and sheet format.

Agree what the sample is intended to approve. A color chip can help with shade selection, but it does not establish full-sheet flatness or the appearance of a machined part. For repeat orders, record the reference sample, finish, batch identification and how a proposed grade or pigment change will be reviewed.

    Fabrication and appearance controls

    • Identify the appearance-critical face.
    • Specify the surface texture and gloss, using an agreed sample where needed.
    • Agree whether protective film is required, which face it covers and any residue limits.
    • State edge finish, corner radius and whether machining marks are acceptable.
    • Provide hole, slot and profile drawings with functional tolerances.
    • Approve visible cut edges and a representative engraved area where required.
    • Agree separators and surface protection to reduce sheet-to-sheet rubbing in transit.

Keep the color reference and finish specification linked to the part drawing and its revision. Use our custom HDPE sheet specification guide to organize the material, fabrication and order requirements.

    Frequently asked questions

Can a screen image be used for color approval?

Use it to explain the general color direction, not as the sole acceptance reference. Screens and lighting can alter the appearance. Approve a physical sample and record the comparison conditions.

How should repeat-order color be checked?

Compare the delivered color with the agreed reference using the same finish and viewing conditions. Check the sample identifier, specification revision and batch records required by the order. Exact visual identity across every batch should not be assumed.

Does a custom color have a different minimum order?

It may. Give the quantity per color, sheet thickness and size, and any repeat demand. We confirm the minimum quantity for the proposed grade and production run in the quotation.
